Old Made New

On Monday, Nov. 13 our 7th Getting Ahead class will hold graduation and will begin a new journey with their HOPE team. If you are interested in being a part of a HOPE team please let us know, or attend our next Bridges training.

Sanding the surface of a chest of drawers that would soon become my new bathroom sink cabinet, I began to see the smoothness and details of the wood emerge. As I added many coats of poly-urethane the glossy top began to appear brand new. Yet, the beauty of the wood was there all along.

It is in 1 John 2:7-8 where John describes the commandment through which we are to live. He explains that this commandment is not a new one, but instead an old one that has been from the beginning, but now made new through the shining example of Christ. As Jesus washes the disciples feet, He is living out the command in John 13:34 to love one another. Jesus says, "Just as I (your teacher) have done, you must also do." A commandment given to us from the beginning emerges out of Christ's willingness to love us so that we may love others, but what if we took it one step further. Love changes when we not just love others, but love as Christ loves.

Loving as Christ loves means loving beyond what is comfortable, beyond what is expected, beyond what is deserved.

For those that choose to be HOPE teams for our graduates they are choosing to step out in faith and love as Christ loved. Through this love our graduates are able to in essence to move away from an old life of instability and to slowly walk into a new life filled with hope, promise and peace. The abundant life that God intends for us all that was there from the beginning is found when we love as Christ did. Not only for our graduates, but for our HOPE teams too.
